When you make your contribution, you are making an investment in the quality of life of this entire community.  Monadnock United Way builds the capacity of community agencies to respond to families and children, elderly and individuals when life takes a turn for the worse.  Strong organizations create a social safety net to ensure that no one has to manage alone when life becomes unmanageable.  Last year, thousands of people right here in the Monadnock Region received the help, care, food and shelter they needed -- made possible through your investment in the Monadnock United Way.

Tools for Living

American Red Cross Emergency Services provides immediate relief to disaster victims, provides emergency communication between military personnel and their families and educates the community how to prevent and prepare for emergencies.  In 2007, NH West Chapter assisted 190 military family members and volunteers responded to 35 disasters assisting 411 people to rebuild their lives after tragic losses to total 601 individuals served.

American Red Cross Transportation Program provides transportation for individuals who have no means to get to medical and critical appointments. During 2007, 82 volunteer drivers provided 7,273 rides to people of all ages. 

Cheshire Housing Trust provides affordable housing opportunities for residents of Cheshire County with low and moderate incomes and helps residents develop solutions to their housing needs. During 2007, 617 individuals/households were accommodated and/or counseled on financial issues.

The Community Kitchen provides hot meals, take-home food boxes, free clothing, household items and advocacy to low and moderate-income individuals in the Monadnock Region.  In 2007, the hot meals program served between 90 and 150 individuals daily -- more than 37,134 meals to approximately 500 different people. The food pantry distributed 35,206 food boxes to 8,452 people in the Monadnock Region. 

Fuel Assistance Program (a program of Southwestern Community Services) provides assistance on a funds available basis to income-eligible households in Cheshire County.  In addition to fuel assistance, case management and budget analysis services are also provided.  During 2007, this program provided $1,333,090 in direct dollar benefits to 2,158 Cheshire County households.  More than 263 emergencies were addressed.  A total of 5,106 individuals were served.

Monadnock Area Housing Coalition (a program of Southwestern Community Services) delivers direct and immediate care to the homeless population and those in imminent danger of becoming homeless through emergency and transitional shelters and prevention and intervention programs.  During 2007, 791 individuals received 16,363 units of service that include case management, prevention/intervention and bed-nights at its shelters.

Monadnock Worksource provides services to adults with developmental disabilities including vocational training, job placement and support, day and therapeutic services, transportation and volunteer opportunities in addition to housing and residential services.  During 2007, 29 adults were served.

NH Legal Assistance provides civil legal services to vulnerable low-income and elderly people ranging from simple legal information and advice to representation at all levels of New Hampshire's court system.  During 2007, NH Legal Assistance provided 1,916 hours of legal services for a total of 517 people, 334 individual clients and their 183 family members, in the Monadnock Region.

NH Pro Bono Referral Program coordinates and leverages the free legal services of volunteer attorneys to help meet the basic legal needs of low-income individuals and families.  Pro Bono concentrates its efforts on matters involving personal safety, the care and support of children, prevention of homelessness and basic needs and dignity.  During 2007, attorneys provided free legal services for 208 cases in the Monadnock Region.

New Hope/New Horizons (a program of Southwestern Community Services) provides employment, outreach, day and community residential supports to adults who have a developmental or an acquired disability.  In 2007, New Hope/New Horizons provided services to 39 individuals.

Salvation Army provides financial assistance for food, clothing, shelter, rental assistance, furniture, utilities, medications and disaster relief as well as referrals to other social service programs.  During 2007, 5,503 individuals were assisted.

Weatherization Program (a program of Southwestern Community Services) is designed to reduce heating and energy costs for low income families, particularly for the elderly, people with disabilities and families with young children, by installing energy efficiency improvements to their homes, while ensuring their health and safety.  During 2007, 46% of weatherized homes received a replacement heating system and 100% either had heating system repairs done and/or corrective health and safety measures benefiting 59 households and 162 individuals.

Working toward Wellness

AIDS Services for the Monadnock Region provides assistance to individuals living with HIV/AIDS and their families, as well as education and prevention programs to reduce the transmission of HIV/AIDS. During 2007, case management services were provided to 24 clients while education/prevention programs reached 6,271 attendees.

American Red Cross Blood Program supports local blood drives.  During 2007, 3,838 units of blood were collected, processed and distributed.

Granite State Monarchs is a peer support center for those with long-term and/or severe mental illness. In 2007, 191 individuals were served.

Maternal Child Health Program (a program of VNA at HCS) assesses the health and well being of pregnant and parenting families throughout the Monadnock Region who lack support and resources surrounding prenatal and parenting education.  The program provides both office and home visits, assists with enrollment in health care, referrals to other community services, case management, education, counseling and general family support.  During 2007, 195 individuals were served in more than 1,168 visits.

MAPS Counseling Services provides outpatient mental health counseling and consultation.  It also provides free cancer support services including groups for cancer patients and their families in Keene and Peterborough and a group for caregivers in Keene.  During 2007, 3,977 hours of counseling sessions were provided to 512 individuals.

 Adult Counseling Services (a program of Monadnock Family Services) provides community-based counseling and psychiatric services to individuals, couples and families.  During 2007, 10,959 hours of service were provided to a total of 1,819 individuals.  1,294 uninsured or underinsured adults received 6,760 of the total hours of service provided.

Monadnock Substance Abuse Services (a program of Monadnock Family Services) provides an array of services ranging from prevention to treatment addressing the impact of addiction on individuals, their friends and their families, and the community through a comprehensive program of education, prevention, treatment and outreach.  During 2007, 3,174 hours of service were provided to a total of 793 clients.

Phoenix House Keene Center is a 24/7 multi-program treatment center providing a continuum of care for individuals suffering from alcohol and other drug abuse/dependency.  It includes adolescent outpatient intervention (SASY) and treatment (MATI).  During 2007, in the Monadnock Region, 207 individuals received residential treatment, 60 received outpatient intervention and 46 received outpatient treatment for a total of 310 individuals served.

Quality of Life for a Lifetime      

Castle Center for Adult Day Health Care (a program of VNA at HCS) provides a safe and stimulating environment for older adults with health conditions which limit independence.  The program offers nursing and personal care services, individual counseling and recreational activities, nutritious snacks and a noontime meal.  During 2007, 101 participants received 63,004 hours of service.

Friendly Bus (a program of VNA at HCS) provides handicapped-accessible transportation for frail elders and disabled adults in Keene, with periodic service to several surrounding communities.  During 2007, 518 riders received 13,007 rides to medical appointments, shopping, and work locations as well as to volunteer, recreational and social opportunities.

Keene Senior Citizens Center provides a community center-based program of activities designed to meet the social, recreational and educational needs of the region's adult population over 50 years of age. During 2007, 725 individuals made 24,802 visits to the center.

Meals on Wheels (a program of VNA at HCS) delivers hot nutritious meals to homebound elderly and disabled adults that includes a critical daily check on the safety and well being of its participants.  In 2007, 95,129 meals were delivered to 682 individuals.

Monadnock Volunteer Center (a program of Monadnock Family Services) mobilizes the skills and talents of people of all ages to help deliver creative solutions to community needs through volunteerism in non-profit agencies and programs that have critical community needs.  During 2007, 615 adult volunteers provided more than 40,094 hours of community service. Monadnock Volunteer Center also reaches the youth and elder populations through Young Monadnock Cares! and the RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) programs. 

Senior Focus (a program of Monadnock Family Services), a medically licensed adult care center, identifies and responds to the needs of adults living in the eastern Monadnock Region providing therapeutic activities, nursing care and supportive services.  In 2007, Senior Focus provided adult daycare to 44 participants and provided 3,871 units of services. 

Investing in our Future

ActingOut (a program of Monadnock Family Services) is a creative arts program that helps adolescents explore contemporary issues through the theatre arts, and through the facilitation of stable, healthy group and peer interaction.  During 2007, 271 youths participated in 1,494 performances, presentations, and/or workshops throughout the region.

American Red Cross - Youth Service Programs provides training in important life-saving skills.  In 2007, 2,301 youth (starting as young as 4 years of age) were trained in the areas of CPR, first aid, water safety, babysitter training, “Safe On My Own” and various preparedness programs.

All R Kids (ARK) Supervised Visitation Center (a program of Monadnock Family Services) provides a safe, neutral, child-friendly environment for supervised visitation and exchange that promotes healthy interaction between family members.  ARK enables children who are separated from one or both parents to maintain contact with their absent parent(s) on a regular basis in an atmosphere free from violence, abuse and the threat of abduction.  During 2007, a total of 60 children participated in 843 visits/exchanges.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Monadnock Region is a mentoring program that provides preventive and intervention services to children and youth (ages 6 through 13) whose socio-economic needs are greater than their current support systems can provide.  In 2007, 469 children were served.

Challenge Program (a program of Monadnock Family Services) utilizes adventure-based activities to develop creative problem solving, impulse control and relational skills in youth.  During 2007, the Challenge Program served 439 individuals for a total of 7,432 hours of service.

Harrisville Children's Center provides flexible, full and part-time year-round nursery and daycare programs for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years of age.  Sliding scale tuition rates are offered for low to moderate-income families.  In 2007, the center served 88 children through its young toddler, older toddler, preschool and summer programs. 

Hillsboro Child Development Center provides accessible comprehensive services for low-income children and families in the Greater Hillsboro area.  In 2007, 125 children from 2 1/2 to 12 years of age were served.

Keene Day Care Center provides year-round care for infants and preschool aged children, as well as a school age program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade while parents are working, looking for work or in training.  In 2007, care was provided to 195 children ages 8 weeks through 11 years representing 164 families from 18 towns.

Keene Family YMCA is a multi-service agency primarily focused on youth and teen development, childcare and family recreation including childcare, after-school programs and summer camps, swimming and lifeguard training, and older youth and teen leadership programs. In 2007, participation in its programs totaled 12,200.

The Lily Garden Learning Center provides a quality, nature-based, hands-on early care and education experience for children 3 months through 5 1/2 years of age.  In 2007, 60 children received 7,691 days of childcare.

MANY Options After-School Program (a program of Monadnock Family Services) is an after-school program for youth in grades five through nine that offers a variety of supervised activities from 2:30-5:30 p.m. five days per week.  During 2007, 76 students participated in the program.

Mayhew is a highly structured and supportive summer program on Newfound Lake that encourages the positive social, emotional, physical and behavioral development of at-risk NH boys and includes regular follow-up visits throughout the school year.  During 2007, 27 boys from the Monadnock Region participated in the program.

Monadnock Community Early Learning Center provides all-day early childhood education for children aged 6 weeks through 6 years and a before- and after-school program for children kindergarten to fourth grade.   A sliding fee scale is offered to ensure that all families have access to affordable, quality childcare.  During 2007, 125 children were served.

North Peterborough Family Program (a program of Southern New Hampshire Services), through its children’s program at both the Riverview Apartment and Prescott Hill Apartment complexes, offers children’s programming and family supportive services collaborating with care providers, law enforcement and the school system to provide a comprehensive variety of services.  During 2007, 143 children were served for a total of 31,240 hours.

The Orchard School is a child development center offering childcare to preschool and school age children during the school year for children 2 1/2 to 6 years of age and during the summer for 2 ½ to 14 year olds.  During 2007, 145 children were enrolled.

Rise…for baby and family provides supportive services to infants and toddlers from birth to the third birthday with special needs and their families.  In 2007, Rise provided services to 232 children.

Winchester Learning Center is a childcare, pre-school and family resource center serving children ages 1 through 12 and their families.  In 2007, 126 children were served.

Thriving Families, Vital Communities

* Cedarcrest Center for Children with Disabilities is a specialized pediatric care facility and school that provides comprehensive care and services to children who are medically and developmentally complex.  In 2007, 10 children and families in the Monadnock Region received residential long and short-term care and day education services.

The Family Center of Greater Peterborough provides parent education courses, family support programs, a home visiting program for pregnant and parenting young women and their families, and a resource and referral guide.  During 2007, 317 individuals participated for a total of 5,443 service sessions.

Hillsboro Parent-Child Center works to support, honor and strengthen families, enhance parent-child relationships, and promote healthy development of children by increasing parenting skills, developing a network for parents and offering a developmentally appropriate program for children.  During 2007, the program provided 48 families 4,570 hours of service.

Monadnock Center for Violence Prevention provides assistance to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking and is committed to breaking the cycle of violence through school, community and business prevention education programs.  In 2007, MCVP served 973 individuals including battered women and men, sexual assault survivors, and victims of stalking and harassment.  It served 48 guests for a total of 1,654 bed-nights in its shelter and over 7,500 people in its prevention education and outreach programs.

Monadnock United Way Help-Line provides information and referral services to individuals needing help in determining which Monadnock Region social services programs are best able to address their needs.  During 2007, 526 referrals were given to 306 individuals.

Parent Outreach Program (a program of Monadnock Family Services) is a community-based parent education, support prevention and early intervention program.  In 2007, 352 individuals were served.

Partners in Health (a program of Monadnock Developmental Services) is a community-based program that addresses the needs of families of children birth to 21 years of age with chronic health conditions affecting their daily life activities.  During 2007, 28 families received 1,315 hours of respite services.

The Samaritans, Inc provides suicide prevention services to the community through a 24-hour anonymous and confidential hotline, teen education, support groups and a community education program.  During 2007, 5,654 individuals called the hotline, participated in community education programs or participated in group sessions.
